"Earlier, goalkeeper Mark Bosnich kept Villa in the game in the first half with three first-class saves in eight minutes as his defence were left bewitched by the flair of the French."
*The Irish Independent*
Wednesday, 1 October 1997
A DRAMATIC extra-time winner from Savo Milosevic propelled Aston Villa into the second round of the UEFA Cup last night.
It was all one-way traffic in the first period of extra-time, with Milosevic guilty of missing one gilt-edged chance before he finally came good.
The Serb striker turned home a low cross from the right wing by Gary Charles to give manager Brian Little's side a deserved victory against Bordeaux.
Earlier, goalkeeper Mark Bosnich kept Villa in the game in the first half with three first-class saves in eight minutes as his defence were left bewitched by the flair of the French.
Lilian Laslandes, playing with four stitches in his knee after being raked during Bordeaux's 2-0 win over Marseille last Thursday, was the first to test the reflexes of the Australian.
Former France skipper Jean-Pierre Papin, fit again after a bout of 'flu, set up Laslandes with a delightful flick but Bosnich saved at full stretch.
Four minutes later. Bordeaux's influential midfielder Johan Micoud attempted a delightful curler only to be denied by Bosnich's acrobatics.
Villa settled down and Ulrich Rame twice denied them.
First, he foiled Dwight Yorke after Stan Collymore had flicked on a Steve Staunton corner, and then he got down smartly to save a 25-yard pile driver from Collymore.
Villa ended the half on top and an lan Taylor flick nine minutes from the break was agonisingly cleared off the line by sweeper Paulo Gralak.
Staunton missed a great chance five minutes into the second half after the Bordeaux goalkeeper was penalised for taking too many steps, blazing his strike wildly over the bar. Villa missed another great chance six minutes from time when Alan Wright sliced his close range effort well wide.
