"Wednesday had to work hard for their reward against a Villa side looking tired after their FA Cup Quarter Final victory over Forest in midweek."
*The Sunday Tribune*
Sunday, 17 March 1996
Wednesday upset Villa
TWIN strikers Guy Whittingham and David Hirst combined to ease Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation worries at the expense of an out of sorts Aston Villa.
Villa old boy Whittingham got the goal Wednesday had been threatening all afternoon in the 58th minute and Hirst sealed the points three minuted from time for only their second win in eight Premiership games.
Wednesday had to work hard for their reward against a Villa side looking tired after their FA Cup Quarter Final victory over Forest in midweek.
It was Whittingham, who had a generally quiet game, that put Wednesday ahead. The goal sparked Villa into life and Dwight Yorke, who had been quiet beforehand, came close in the 64th minute before Hirst clinched victory.
