"Both teams were now playing with more dash, and the Villa had one or two good chances, but their shooting at goal was very poor."
*Birmingham Daily Post*
Monday, 8 December 1890
BLACKBURN ROVERS v. ASTON VILLA.
At Blackburn, before 1,000 people.
The Villa kicked off, and some even play followed.
A foul against the Rovers was got away at the expense of a fruitless corner.
Some loose play followed, neither team seeming able to get into their proper "stride."
A corner for the Rovers was finally headed over, the Rovers keeping up pressure, but missing a good chance in front of Warner.
The Villa next had a look in, but the ball was sent behind.
The Rovers pressed, and play was mainly confined to the Villa quarters.
Gow was then called on to save, Campbell failing to clear, and Lofthouse centred a beauty, which Southworth converted into a goal after forty minutes' play.
Warner had to negotiate a hot one from Lofthouse, the half-time score being- Rovers 1 goal, Villa none.
Resuming, the Rovers immediately began to press, gaining a fruitless corner.
The Villa then got up, Gow saving twice in succession. A foul against the Villa in front of goal enabled the Rovers to score.
The Villa then attacked, Gow having to save a shot by Dickson.
From a good run and pass by Townley Lofthouse scored a third goal for the Rovers.
Both teams were now playing with more dash, and the Villa had one or two good chances, but their shooting at goal was very poor.
Both goals were in turn visited, and then the Villa got up and Dickson scored their first goal.
The Rovers pressed, and Southworth scored a fourth and Lofthouse a fifth goal.
Result: Blackburn Rovers 5 goals, Aston Villa 1 goal.
